When the Iowa Hawkeyes look back at their time at the Paradise Jam, they’ll likely be thinking about missed opportunities.

There were definitely plenty of chances to leave St. Thomas, V.I., strong, but the Hawkeyes came up short in the fourth-place game of the Paradise Jam, falling to Long Beach State on Monday, 78-72. The loss drops Iowa to 2-3 overall and the Hawkeyes went 1-2 on their trip to the Virgin Islands.

Iowa did manage to shoot 28-of-59 from the field, but was only 4-of-15 from beyond the 3-point arc and 12-of-18 at the charity stripe. Junior guard Bryce Cartwright led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting, doing so off the bench. In fact, the Hawkeyes finished with 42 bench points as freshman Roy Devyn Marble was able to get 11 points as well.

One starter — sophomore Eric May — was in double-figures for points with 15, including 12 in the second half.

Meanwhile, the 49ers outrebounded the Hawkeyes by a 39-29 margin, and had all five starters in double figures for scoring.

Iowa returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Nov. 26 to play Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. Central and the game is scheduled to be televised by the Big Ten Network.
