As first reported by the Des Moines Register‘s Randy Peterson, Iowa football radio analyst Ed Podolak was injured Sunday morning in an accident, and was being treated at a hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz.

According to the report, which had comment from Podolak’s daughter Laura, Ed Podolak was there to attend a friend’s wedding. On Monday night while hosting “Hawk Talk with Fran McCaffery,” Ed’s radio partner, Iowa play-by-play man Gary Dolphin, confirmed the report, saying the accident took place when Ed was walking back to his hotel and was crossing a crosswalk.

“He has got broken legs, broken ribs, all kinds of multiple injuries as you can imagine,” Dolphin said during the radio show from Carlos O’Kelly’s in Iowa City. “Pedestrian versus car is not pretty in any shape or form.”

Laura’s statement to the Des Moines Register said that Ed was in stable condition, and that according to police, alcohol did not play a role in what took place.

In a release sent out by the UI late Monday night, Laura said her father’s injuries “are serious, but non-life threatening.”

“Our family greatly appreciates the calls and well-wishes we have received from friends and fans throughout the country. But, we also request that everyone respects our privacy as Dad recovers from his injuries,” she said in the release. “We also want to thank the emergency personnel, doctors and nurses for their quick response and continued care.”

Ed has been the Hawkeyes’ radio color commentator since 1982.
