Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery has been suspended one game and Iowa has been fined $10,000 as a result of his ejection from the Hawkeyes’ 75-71 loss to Wisconsin over the weekend, the Big Ten announced Tuesday morning.

McCaffery will not coach the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes’ upcoming contest Jan. 9 at home against Northwestern. The conference determined that his antics leading to his ejection violated its Sportsmanship Policy, specifically Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01, which enforces that no “fundamental elements of sportsmanship” are compromised, including respect toward game officials.

“I regret my actions and accept the Big Ten Conference’s decision,” McCaffery said in a statement released by the UI on Tuesday.

Iowa assistant coach Kirk Speraw, who took over the final 12 minutes of last weekend’s contest in McCaffery’s place, will serve as the interim head coach for the Hawkeyes’ game against Northwestern.

McCaffery has a press conference Tuesday afternoon that will continue as initially scheduled.
