IOWA CITY, Iowa — At halftime inside Kinnick Stadium, the No. 9 Iowa Hawkeyes lead intrastate rival Iowa State, 28-0.

Like last week’s win over Eastern Illinois, the game began with Iowa scoring on each of its first two drives. This time around, both scoring drives went 71 yards.

The first series lasted 13 plays and was capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ricky Stanzi to wide receiver Marvin McNutt. After a Cyclone three-and-out, the Hawkeyes came back took a 16-play drive into the second quarter. It was finished off by running back Jewel Hampton’s two-yard touchdown run.

Hampton returned to the field for the first time since the 2009 Outback Bowl after missing last season with a torn ACL and being suspended last week. He had 11 carries on his first series after Adam Robinson got the start.

Iowa’s third touchdown of the afternoon came in the second quarter. The series began at the Hawkeye 25-yard line, and Stanzi found McNutt for a 66-yard completion to the Iowa State 9-yard line. Stanzi then threw his second touchdown pass of the day from two yards out to tight end Allen Reisner to give Iowa a 21-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes scored again on its following drive after a quarterback sneak by Stanzi from one yard out, giving Iowa a 28-0 lead. The score was set up by a 75-yard run from Robinson.
