Iowa junior defensive tackle Mike Daniels was named co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. He shares this week’s honor with Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones.
Daniels was a force for the Hawkeyes in their 45-0 win on Sept. 25 over Ball State. He finished with six tackles and a sack. Four of Daniels’ tackles were unassisted and for a loss of yards.
He is the second Iowa player to earn a conference honor in 2010. Senior running back Paki O’Meara was named the Big Ten’s Special Teams Player of the Week after the Hawkeyes’ season-opening win over Eastern Illinois.
Daniels is the first Hawkeye to be named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week since linebacker Troy Johnson received the accolade after a 12-0 Iowa win over Minnesota last season.
The 17th-ranked Hawkeyes host No. 22 Penn State on Oct. 2, with kickoff from Kinnick Stadium scheduled for 7 p.m. Central. The game will be aired nationally on ESPN.
