The Iowa men’s basketball team announced Wednesday that junior guard Matt Gatens has a hand injury that will require surgery and he has been ruled out for an indefinite period of time.
According to the release sent out Wednesday, Gatens tore a tendon in his left hand — which is his non-shooting hand — during practice on Oct. 26. He is scheduled to have the procedure done Thursday, and the team is expecting a full recovery.
Gatens was the Hawkeyes’ returning leading scorer from last season after averaging 12.3 points per contest.
Iowa’s season opener is on Nov. 14 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes also have an exhibition contest against Illinois-Springfield on Nov. 7.
