Here’s a rundown of what Iowa basketball fans can expect Sunday afternoon with the Prime Time League, which takes place at the North Liberty Community Center:
McCurry’s/Mike Gatens Real Estate (1-1) vs. Coach’s Corner/Two Rivers Bank & Trust (2-0)
3 p.m., New Gym
Both of these teams come into this match-up off of wins. Corner/Rivers is the lone undefeated team through two games and escaped with a 97-94 win on June 21 over Monica’s/L.L. Pelling Company, a game where Iowa junior Anthony Hubbard was held to 11 points and nine rebounds, while UNI’s Chip Rank emerged with 32 points to lead the way.
As for McCurry’s/Gatens, it came away with an 80-78 win over Iowa City Ready Mix/Vinton Merchants thanks in large part to a pair of free throws made by Iowa junior Eric May with 2.4 seconds remaining. May finished with a team-high 26 points in the victory, while freshman guard Josh Oglesby finished with seven points. Senior forward Andrew Brommer will still be unavailable for McCurry’s/Gatens as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery.
Falbo Bros Pizza/Culver’s of Coralville (1-1) vs. Monica’s/L.L. Pelling Company (1-1)
3 p.m., Old Gym
After being shorthanded in its PTL opener, Falbo/Culver’s had its full roster on June 21. With the combination of senior Matt Gatens, sophomore Melsahn Basabe and freshman Aaron White, Falbo/Culver’s managed to beat Jill Armstrong of Lepic-Kroeger Realtors, 96-89. Gatens led the way with 26 points, while Basabe had 22 points on 7-of-24 shooting and White came away with 12 points and six rebounds.
As for Monica’s/Pelling, it fell to 1-1 after losing 97-94 to Corner/Rivers, but still received an 11-of-22 shooting performance from sophomore Devyn Marble, who had 27 points. Senior forward Devon Archie had six points and 11 rebounds.
Iowa City Ready Mix/Vinton Merchants (1-1) vs. Jill Armstrong of Lepic-Kroeger Realtors (0-2)
4:30 p.m., New Gym
Jill Armstrong looks to avoid an 0-3 start to this summer’s Prime Time League, while Ready Mix/Merchants will attempt to get back above .500 on Sunday when these two teams square off.
Ready Mix/Merchants lost an 80-78 heartbreaker to McCurry’s/Gatens on June 21, but had the services of senior guard Bryce Cartwright and freshman forward Gabe Olaseni after both missed the team’s PTL opener. Cartwright had 20 points and seven assists, while Olaseni had four points and four rebounds in defeat.
As for Jill Armstrong, it was led by former UNI guard Ali Farokhmanesh’s 23 points in a 96-89 loss to Falbo/Culver’s. Sophomore forward Zach McCabe contributed 12 points and seven assists.
