Gary Dolphin, who is the play-by-play announcer for Iowa football and men’s basketball on the Hawkeye Radio Network, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the UI announced in a release Wednesday morning.

In the release, Dolphin states his doctors caught the cancer in its early stages and that he plans to pursue a radiation treatment. He doesn’t expect to miss calling any Iowa football or men’s basketball games.

“Barring unforeseen circumstances, I expect to fulfill my responsibilities to the University and Learfield Sports, where football and basketball are concerned,” Dolphin said. “In the meantime, I would appreciate the prayers and well wishes from Hawkeye fans all over the country. I’d also like to urge all males age 50 and above to have the simple PSA blood test performed. It could save their life.”

Dolphin will be entering his 15th season as Iowa’s full-time play-by-play man for both sports, calling football with Ed Podolak and basketball with Bobby Hansen.
