After opening last season ranked ninth nationally, the Iowa Hawkeyes will start 2011 unranked, marking the first time they begin a season outside the AP top 25 since 2008.
Four Big Ten teams enter 2011 ranked. The league’s newest member, Nebraska, is the lone top 10 team coming in at No. 10. Wisconsin, who played in the Rose Bowl last season, is 11th. Michigan State comes in at No. 17 following an 11-2 season, and Ohio State is ranked 18th in the initial poll.
Iowa was one of four Big Ten teams to receive votes, however. Penn State is 27th with 115 points, Iowa 32nd with 19 points, Michigan 38th with seven points, and Northwestern tied for 46th with one point.
