To get you all ready for Saturday’s game between Iowa and Iowa State, I put together a list of things you ought to know before these two face off at Jack Trice Stadium.

At the end, I’ll provide what I think are three keys to an Iowa victory.

Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) at Iowa State Cyclones (1-0)

Jack Trice Stadium; Ames, Iowa

Sept. 10, 2011

11 a.m. Central

TV: FSN (Joel Meyers, Joel Klatt, Jim Knox)

– In Iowa City, the game can be seen on either Mediacom Connections Channel 22 (MC-22) or CSN Chicago Plus

Radio: Hawkeye Radio Network (Gary Dolphin, Ed Podolak, Rob Brooks)

Weather: 72 degrees

Brendan’s Three Keys to the Game:

1. Stay disciplined

One of the reasons Iowa State was able to come from behind to beat UNI last weekend was because the Panthers committed a total of 16 penalties. Iowa is coming off a game where it only committed three. But with this being the Hawkeyes’ first road game of the season (and a rivalry game, no less), discipline is crucial. Iowa can’t afford to get called for too many penalties on Saturday, because playing uncharacteristically is only going to lead to Iowa State having more opportunities to do damage on both sides of the football.

2. Big game from Coker

We all know running back Marcus Coker had a game to forget against Tennessee Tech, but he’s going to be the key to this offense on Saturday. Not just for his running ability, but also when Iowa does face passing situations. Expect Iowa State to blitz quarterback James Vandenberg constantly. If Coker can handle his assignments picking up blitzes when need be, it could open up for big plays downfield to players such as wideouts Marvin McNutt and Keenan Davis.

3. Weather the storm

Iowa State is coming into this game with a chip on its shoulders. Not only because Iowa has dominated this series the last few seasons, but because of the way the Cyclones played last week and because they are playing this game at home. Expect Iowa State to be riding a huge emotional wave early in this game. If the Hawkeyes can weather the storm like it did the last time it visited Jack Trice Stadium two years ago, then good things can happen for this team on Saturday. Either way, this is a game Iowa is going to have to grind out.
