Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field on Aug. 31 when the Chicago Cubs play the San Francisco Giants. The announcement came Friday from Iowa sports information director Matt Weitzel.

McCaffery’s first pitch at “The Friendly Confines” takes place one day before the Hawkeye football team opens its 2012 season down the road at Soldier Field against defending MAC champion Northern Illinois. Weitzel said the Cubs haven’t announced yet whether or not McCaffery would also be singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch that afternoon.

In a release sent Friday, McCaffery said he was honored to be asked to throw out the first pitch, especially during a weekend where Iowa fans will likely be out in full force around the city of Chicago.

“We have a tremendous fan base in the Chicago area and I know there will also be a large number of Hawkeye fans traveling to Chicago for the Cubs game and the Iowa football opener at Soldier Field,” McCaffery said. “It will be a special weekend.”
