Junior forward Darius Stokes is now officially on scholarship for the Iowa Hawkeyes, head coach Fran McCaffery announced Thursday. The Hawkeyes had one scholarship available for the upcoming 2013-14 season following the transfer of guard Patrick Ingram to IUPUI earlier this summer.

Stokes, who is the son of former Iowa basketball player Greg Stokes, joined the program in 2010 as a walk-on and redshirted during the 2010-11 season. For the past two seasons, Stokes has played sparingly for the Hawkeyes. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining and is part of a junior class that also consists of guard Josh Oglesby, forward Aaron White and center Gabe Olaseni.

“Darius is an incredibly hard worker who brings energy and enthusiasm on a daily basis,” McCaffery said in a statement released Thursday. “It’s rewarding to see his growth and improvement since his freshman year. Darius is a valuable member of this team and has earned this scholarship.”

Iowa still has three remaining open scholarships to fill for 2014-15 after seniors Devyn Marble, Melsahn Basabe and Zach McCabe all use up their remaining eligibility this upcoming season.
