Despite seeing a lead that was once 20 points during the second half dwindle down to five, the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes managed to hold off Nebraska to win their Big Ten opener 67-57 over the Cornhuskers on Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the first time Iowa won its league opener since the 2006-07 season and the Hawkeyes are now 12-2 overall as a result of the victory.

Iowa actually trailed 20-14 in the first half before junior forward Aaron White took control of the game. The Hawkeyes went on a 16-3 run to end the half ahead 30-23 and White scored nine of Iowa’s 16 points during this stretch. He finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds.

Coming out of the locker room, the one-man show became Adam Woodbury. He only played the first five minutes of the second half, but the 7-1 sophomore center scored six of the Hawkeyes’ first seven points during the second stanza and also hauled down three rebounds.

After Nebraska got to within 37-29, Iowa proceeded to go on an 18-6 run that gave the Hawkeyes a 55-35 lead with 8:16 remaining in the contest. The Cornhuskers would get to within 60-55 with 1:45 left, but the Hawkeyes scored their final seven points of the game from the foul line, four of which came courtesy of senior guard Devyn Marble.

In addition to White’s performance, Marble finished with team-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds and sophomore forward Jarrod Uthoff tallied 11 points off the bench.

Iowa now sets its sights on a top 25 clash with No. 4 Wisconsin on Jan. 5 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central and the game will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network. Be sure to visit HawkeyeDrive.com afterwards for complete coverage from Madison.
